Setenil de las Bodegas – town in Spain built into the rock

A Small town of Setenil de las Bodegas can be found in the province of Cadiz in Spain. There would be nothing special about it if the town itself would not be built into the rock.

Setenil means a wine cellar in English and was once a thriving winery. However, the town is more famous for its picturesque houses which are built into the rock overhang.

The city stretches along the river Rio Trejo and even some homes are built in the gorge itself which is amazing.

The name of this town dates back to the 15th century. As mentioned the city was known for vineyards, but also renowned for olive and almond groves. Vineyards are already just a history because it was attacked by the insects, which completely destroyed a large number of roots of the vine in 1860.

Over the past centuries, Setenil de las Bodegas‏ became renowned also for its meat products. Chorizo ​​sausage and other products made of pigs, which are bred in the hills around the town, are made from the finest meats.

Setenil de las Bodegas is located almost in the same distance from Seville, Malaga or Cadiz, right in the middle of the triangle made of these cities.
