The Old Town

Nestled on a cornice set between the banks of the Adige river, the Old Town (Città Antica) is the heart of the city, home to majestic buildings dating back to Roman times. Supposedly of Etruscan origin and formerly populated by Gallic cisalpine Gauls, the town was founded by the Romans in the 1st century BC. The Old Town features significant landmarks such as the Verona Arena – a Roman amphitheater and former gladiator battleground, which could host up to 30,000 spectators in ancient times -, now internationally famous for the large-scale opera performances given there. Other must-see remains of the Old Town include the Ponte Pietra (Italian for “Stone Bridge”) – once known as the Pons Marmoreus – which remained intact until the Second World War and was then rebuilt with original materials, the Roman theatre, and the Arco dei Gavi. The Cathedral of Santa Maria Matricolare, the Basilica of San Zeno, the Basilica of San Anastasia, the Church of St Peter of Verona, the Castelvecchio, are all remarkably well-preserved ancient edifices. What’s more, the district concentrates most of the city’s bars and restaurants. It shouldn’t come as a surprise, therefore, that the Old Town is an expensive area to stay in Verona.

Borgo Milano

Located to the west of the city, Borgo Milano is, as its name suggests, a district built in the direction of Milan. This is the city’s working-class area, situated close to the stadium. It can, therefore, be noisy, especially on match days: in Italy, football is sacred. Very appreciated by the Veronese, the district is, and one of the best places to stay in Verona to enjoy the liveliness of the city at any time of the day and be in contact with the population. Borgo Milano is a convenient place to stay in Verona: it offers the double advantage of low-budget accommodation and easy access to Lake Garda, a few kilometers away.
