If it was previously necessary to go to Cagliari (Sardinia), Genoa, Naples, Salerno or Civitavecchia to go to Sicily, 2019 is the latest in maritime transport from France: Corsica Ferries has opened a line from Toulon and Nice to Trapani, the port located west of Sicily closest to France.

The first departure took place on April 21, 2019, and the company plans three rotations per week, one from Nice and two weekly trips from Toulon. This is a measure that should delight air transport enthusiasts and road-trip enthusiasts (but it will once again upset environmental activists and supporters). Sicily being an ideal destination to visit by van, converted van or car, it will only be necessary to go to the port of Toulon to reach the Sicilian coasts via the port of Trapani, but after all 19 hours of crossing. Note that there are also stops in Corsica and Sardinia. Corsica Ferries is currently the only shipping company to have opened these two lines. The shipping giant now has 12 ferries and a high-speed ship, serving Corsica, Sardinia, the island of Elba, Mallorca and now Sicily, through 19 lines. The website allows you to find the best rates at the times – unfortunately imposed – closest to your holiday dates. While there is currently only the Corsica Ferries company that links France to Sicily, you can push as far as Genoa by travelling with the Grandi Navi Veloci (GNV) if the routes from Toulon and Nice are incompatible with your preferences.

How to book your ferry trip to Sicily from Toulon?

As with airplanes and other public transport, it is best to book your ticket several weeks in advance if you have the opportunity. It’s easy to book a ticket. On the Direct Ferries website, enter your holiday dates for the Toulon-Trapani return trip, the desired times, the number of passengers, the possible number of animals and the type, make and model of your vehicle (car, bicycle, camper van, van/van, etc. or no vehicle).

Then compare the different prices compared by the search engine. On the Direct Ferries website, at the time of writing this article – but prices can quickly fluctuate upwards – we find crossings between €130 and €144 per round trip with a van in the hold. One last thing: it may be preferable to take out cancellation insurance free of charge, for €9.75 per passenger. It’s up to you, but many reservations are changed or cancelled, and the standard ticket charges up to €35 for changes. Please note that you may be tempted to book directly on the Corsica Ferries website to find a cheaper ticket, but you will be disappointed: the prices are essentially the same.
