You have finally booked your flight tickets and in a few weeks you will be under the Sicilian sun? You are probably wondering how to transfer from the airport to Catania’s city centre. You will have a choice of many options to suit all budgets to get to the city centre from the airport: bus, taxi, train or private car.
Catania-Fontanarossa International Airport (CTA) is located about 7 kilometers southwest of Catania’s city center and is one of Sicily’s most important air hubs. It operates both domestic and international flights and nearly 8 million passengers pass through it every year.
The airport is sometimes subject to temporary closures due to volcanic ash that can escape from Mount Etna , located only a few kilometres away. There are many connections to make a transfer between the airport and the city center of Catania and we have listed them to make your stay in Catania easier.
The Alibus bus company (AMT) runs from the airport to Catania’s central station with 15 intermediate stops, including the “Archi Via Cardinale Dusmet” stop located between the famous “Piazza del Duomo” and the Catania ferry port. The journey takes about 20 minutes. This is one of the most economical solutions because the ticket costs only 4.00€ and is valid for 90 minutes.
Tickets are available at the airport, at the bus stop ticket office, at authorised dealers or directly on board (payment in cash or by credit card).
The shuttles leave every 25 minutes and run between 4:40 a.m. and midnight.
Other cities in Sicily can be reached by other bus companies, in particular by Interbus.
Transfer from Catania-Fontanarossa airport by metro
There is no direct connection between the city centre and Catania airport via the metro. However, you can use the city’s only metro line to get to Giovanni XXIII station – next to the main station – and take the Alibus bus company to transfer you between the airport and Catania’s city centre and vice versa.
Transfer by train
Same scenario as the transfer by metro, no direct link exists between the city centre and Catania-Fontanarossa airport via train.
To reach the airport by train, you will necessarily have to make a stop at Catania’s main station and take an Alibus bus to your arrival point.
